Hudson, who’s portraying Aretha Franklin in the MGM biopic: “Respect”, is she excited to play the role and Aretha Franklin chose her to do so. “I’m honored that she picked me to play her,” said Hudson. “I mean who can say that? And again, I would have never done it without her wishes.”
National Geographic will also pay tribute to Aretha Franklin in their series, “Genius: Aretha,” scheduled to launch in January 2021. The series stars Cynthia Erivo as Aretha Franklin. When asked about the show, Hudson responded, “I know that Aretha was adamant that [her life] be a film. If it’s not a film, it’s nothing.”
Despite Hudson’s greenlight from Aretha Franklin, the singer’s only son spoke out about his frustrations with the family’s lack of involvement in the MGM project.
“How can you make a movie about a person and not talk to the person son or grandchildren about important information?” he asked on social media. “How can you put a person’s family (image) in a book and not ask permission?”
As the world gears up to watch the life of Aretha Franklin on the big screen and small screen, what do you think about Hudson’s comments on the upcoming series? We only hope they tell the story right!
