John David Washington wanted to carve his own path as an actor so he would hide his father’s identity to land roles on his own merit.
The 36-year-old actor said, “I used to lie, saying he was a construction worker or in jail, just to have some sense of normalcy.”
“They would always judge me. So I hid who my father was. I guess I was protecting myself.” John David Washington felt he would not be taken seriously if people knew he was the child of the Academy Award-winning Denzel Washington.
This is not the first time that he has opened up about how his famous father has impacted his career goals. John David Washington once spilled that he did not share his acting dreams with his father until he landed his first major role.
Prior to acting, John David Washington played in the NFL for the St. Louis Rams before he retired due to a torn Achilles tendon. He did not tell his father about his new career aspirations until landing the role in the HBO series “Ballers.”
“He just kept asking questions like ‘Is this real?’, John David Washington recalls when his dad first found out about his acting career, “I guess he had to check it with his agents to make sure it was real.”
Tell us, would you have done the same thing if your father was the incomparable Denzel Washington?
