Rosie O’Donnell weighs in on Whitney Houston’s sexuality.
During an appearance on the “Hot Takes & Deep Dives” podcast, O’Donnell recalls a time that Houston was a no-show for her popular talk show during the 90s. The late legend was, at that time “in a downward spiral with drugs” and it seemed pretty obvious.
O’Donnell says that Robyn Crawford had written her to share that it had been a big day for them as they worked toward getting Houston the help that she needed.
At the time, the former “The Rosie O’Donnell Show” host believed Houston was concerned about the rumors swirling around her and her friend Robyn Crawford. “Whitney was troubled by, I think, the gay part of her life and didn’t want it exposed, [ I ] think that there was a lot of conflict about that,” shared O’Donnell.
She explains how difficult it could’ve been for Houston during that time
“That weighed heavily on her, growing up in the church and gospel and singing,” O’Donnell continued. “I think there was a lot of conflict about that.”
While Houston never confirmed the ongoing rumors before her tragic death in 2012, Crawford released a book titled, “A Song For You: My Life With Whitney Houston,” in 2019 and shared her side of the alleged relationship. She explains how, at 19, she met a 16-year-old Whitney Houston while working together as summer camp counselors in East Orange, NJ. She promised to look out for Houston.
Years later, Crawford has tried to keep that promise.
“We wanted to be together, and that meant just us,” she wrote in the book.
After landing a deal with Clive Davis at Arista, Houston broke things off. Crawford revealed that Houston gifted her with a slate blue Bible in 1982 and explained why they could no longer be physical.
“She said we shouldn’t be physical anymore, because it would make our journey even more difficult,” shared Crawford. She said if people find out about us, they would use this against us, and back in the ’80s that’s how it felt.”
