This year, Toronto’s Afrochic welcomed over 600 guests on July 14-15, 2018 – some of which had never attended Afrochic before – to witness and experience the theme of Activated Healing. This was a first for everyone involved and the team pulled out all the stops with lead partner, Aurora to bring this vision to life.

An Immersive Cultural Experience

The Aurora lounge, created by set designer, Jade, immersed guests in a dome like space draped in foliage, moss and greenery with sounds of nature that transported them to a place of tranquility in the midst of such an energetic event.

Day 1 included performances by Trapyogabae, Jayd Ink, Shi Wisdom and 11:11 before a vibrant Dj set by none other than the legendary, Erykah Badu.

Expanding Its Footprint: Afrochic is Now A 2-Day Event

This year was the first year that Afrochic took place over two days. The second day switched gears from a focus on wellness to generational wealth. Day 2 kicked off at the Globe and Mail Centre with a panel moderated by TD Bank’s Naki Osutei and featuring panelists Nicolle Williams, Andrew “Smokey” Robinson, Ricardo Mcrae, Andray Domise and Lauren Simmons, the only black woman on the New York Stock Exchange.

Day 2 culminated with an intimate Q&A with Erykah Badu, hosted by LGBTQ activist, Kim Katrin Milan. Erykah, who went into depth about maintaining balance as an artist and a doula, shared many gems with the audience including: “I try not to remain stagnant or confined to what I’m supposed to like or be based on my age or race.”
