Brandy is back and better than ever, but the journey to this place was not easy. The singer opens up on why it took her 8 years to complete her latest album, “B7,” and how she slipped into a really dark time after the birth of her daughter.
“ I was a little bit lost eight years ago musically, creatively, spiritually, I had to pull myself together, I had to pull it all together and make it all make sense,” she tells People magazine.
In 2002 the singer/actress gave birth to her daughter, Sy’rai, with then-partner and producer Robert Smith. Brandy and Robert pretended to be married while filming the reality show TBD NAME but it was later revealed the marriage never happened. She says, “it changed people’s perspective of me, but I had to focus on what was important, which was Sy’rai.”
She also opened up about the 2006 car accident that took the life of a 38-year-old woman. While she wasn’t charged criminally, Brandy’s case was settled with the woman’s family out of court. Following the breakup with Robert and the car accident, Brandy recalls the amount of pain that followed. She contemplated taking her own life.
The “Sitting Up In My Room” singer says, “I remember laying in bed super depressed, I [told] myself, ‘So, you’re just going to go out like this? That’s wack. You have a daughter. If you can’t do it for yourself, do it for her because this is not the way to leave a mark in her life.”
It was her daughter who helped to pull her out of this very dark time, Brandy shares, “If Sy’rai wasn’t here I wouldn’t be either, the place that I was in, it just felt like I wasn’t going to make it through.”
“I’m in a place now, where I can be proud of moving in the right direction,” says Brandy.
Not only is she celebrating her seventh studio album, “B7,” Brandy has been receiving her well-deserved flowers now that her hit ’90s sitcom “Moesha” has found its way to Netflix.
We’re so happy Brandy has new music and wish her continued success!
