Hip-Hop Pioneer Yo-Yo Talks Fearless Legacy And Why Cooking Has Become Her Peace In ‘Downright Delicious With Yo-Yo’ Season Finale
Dr. Yolanda “Yo-Yo” Whitaker’s only competition is herself, and she continues to elevate to new heights.
As a pioneer of hip-hop, Yo-Yo changed the game when she came onto the scene as a protėgé to fellow native Los Angeles rapper Ice Cube. She used lyrics to convey messages about female empowerment and continues to do so through her philanthropy work today.
Through her Yo-Yo School of Hip-Hop, the “You Can’t Play With My Yo-Yo” emcee teaches at-risk youth, while maintaining a focus on education and community empowerment that she holds near and dear to her heart.
To those aware of the rich history of hip-hop, Yo-Yo is among a class of musicians who do more than make songs; she has become a household name and a brand.

“My brand in three words? I would have to say fearless. First of all, because to be a female coming into the industry 37 years ago–when you had to battle men, and women weren’t highly respected–you had to be fearless,” said Yo-Yo during the Hip-Hop Museum Gala in New York City back in October. “I walked into dark places with confidence, knowing that I was prepared to win.”
Celebrating Hip-Hop
Yo-Yo served as the host for the event that took place at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City on October 15. The gala, attended by everyone from Big Daddy Kane to Jim Jones, Fat Joe, and more, was a major fundraising event held to support the construction of the Hip Hop Museum’s permanent home, which is set to open in 2026.

Honorees included the late Andre Harrell, who was honored with a posthumous Legacy Award, and Slick Rick, who received the Storytelling Vanguard Award. The People’s Champ Vanguard Award went to Fat Joe, and Kool DJ Red Alert was presented with the Sound of the Culture Award.
During the event, Queens native and rapper Nasir “Nas” Jones announced a $1 million donation, which was immediately matched by Resorts World New York City.
Her Work Beyond The Mic
“I’m the party starter. The party doesn’t start till I walk in,” Yo-Yo laughed. “I bring the energy—it’s everlasting. My faith in God has kept me grounded in this industry for a long time. Entertaining, educating, and serving as a community activist and friend—hip-hop has allowed me to be all of that. And my love for Christ continues to fuel me with joy, purpose, and passion. That same energy shines through in my new season of Downright Delicious With Yo-Yo, only on aspireTV.”
Cooking has become Yo-Yo’s sanctuary—a source of peace and creativity through the years. With her television series, she invites both longtime fans and newcomers into her kitchen for recipes packed with flavor and heart, served with conversations that inspire purpose and connection. Along the way, she’s welcomed a few familiar faces to share in the fun.
In a sneak peek from the season finale of Downright Delicious With Yo-Yo, the emcee revealed something few fans knew: she hadn’t been able to watch herself on television until the launch of her cooking show—despite her appearances in classics like Menace II Society and Martin.
