A’ja Wilson Makes History: Honoring Her Father’s Legacy, Retiring Her Jersey, And Elevating Her Brand With Nike
A’ja Wilson continues to cement her legacy both on and off the court. The two-time WNBA champion and reigning MVP recently witnessed a historic moment at the University of South Carolina, where her No. 22 jersey was officially retired.
This milestone not only recognizes Wilson’s dominance in women’s basketball but also honors the deep-rooted legacy of her father, Roscoe Wilson, who made Black history at the same institution.
Roscoe Wilson was a trailblazer at the University of South Carolina, becoming one of the first Black basketball players to suit up for the Gamecocks. His influence and perseverance paved the way for his daughter’s legendary career. A’ja’s jersey retirement is a full-circle moment, showcasing the impact of Black excellence across generations.
“Mom and Dad, there aren’t enough thank yous I can say, but in everything that I do, I hope I make you proud,” Wilson said at the time of the ceremony.

Ahead of the event, her former coach, the legendary Dawn Staley spoke to the influence Wilson has had not only on the game of basketball, but the people from South Carolina.
“A’ja has given hope to every little boy and girl who dare to dream and have their dreams realized before their very eyes,” Staley said. “Young people know A’ja and love A’ja and are adding discipline to their life because of her reality. Her reality is she’s the best player in the world – from our city.”
Beyond the court, Wilson continues to expand her influence in the sneaker world. She recently unveiled her latest Nike collection, which embodies her signature style and relentless work ethic. The new line features performance-driven basketball sneakers and apparel designed to inspire the next generation of athletes. Wilson’s collaboration with Nike reinforces her commitment to empowering young women in sports, ensuring that Black female athletes have the visibility and resources they deserve.
“It was just a matter of time, honestly,” Wilson said. “Because we are in it and we live it, we see how much we’re valued and worth. But now to see everyone in the basketball community finally catch up, it means the world. To say that I can put out a shoe, and to do this here at home, it’s truly special and I’m so excited to see what the future has to hold.”
From breaking records to breaking barriers, A’ja Wilson’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience and legacy. As she continues to shine in the WNBA and beyond, her impact will be felt for generations to come. Stay tuned as she continues to elevate the game—both on and off the hardwood.
