‘Who’s Behind Black Art’ — 2025 London Director Awards Finalist — Explores The Power Of Black Creativity And Resistance

Since the beginning of time, Black art has served as an act of resistance in America. A new docu-series, Who’s Behind Black Art, explores further the role that Black art plays in history.

 

The project’s director and writer John Campbell, is no stranger to the various art forms occupied by some of America’s most prolific artists. Kicking off a career in the music industry, working alongside greats like Whitney Houston, Elton John, Boy George, and countless others, Campbell’s work is a culmination of creativity, business, and Black joy.

As the founder of JCINTIME, a creative management and production company, Campbell has found himself immersed in the power of storytelling as the force behind the 2025 Documentary feature COLOR, as well as Who’s Behind Black Art, which is coming to aspireTV on Thursday February 6th at 8PM ET.

According to an official synopsis for the docuseries, Who’s Behind Black Art, “is a 4-part documentary series exploring the lives of five emerging Black artists from Good Black Art. It offers a personal glimpse into the creators behind the art, featuring a celebrity roundtable and a star-studded exhibit at the World Trade Center.”

 

In episode one, viewers are introduced to five emerging Black artists including Adrian Armstrong, Laurena Fineus, Jewel Ham, The Ham, and Mario Joyce. The artists take those watching on a journey into the art ecosystem, highlighting the highs and lows that come with being a Black artist, and the importance of leaning on community. They also give an inside glimpse into their hopes and dreams as artists, and the forces they lean on like leading curators, collectors, educators, fellow artists as well as activists who help them take up space.

Across four episodes, we learn about Black women’s role in the art ecosystem, the importance of representation, and the role that art plays in movements like Black Lives Matter. Additionally, viewers will be able to witness how social media has impacted the art world, followed by a finale that showcases the “Good People” exhibit at the World Trade Center curated by Phillip Michael Collins

Who’s Behind Black Art takes a beautiful peek inside the role that Black art plays in the world at large. Recently, the docuseries was named as a finalist for the 2025 London Director Awards, an IMDb-qualifying film festival held in London, United Kingdom. Its mission is to discover and promote talented directors from around the world, providing them with a platform to showcase their work to the public and industry distributors.
